Abstract

Throughout his life, Ger Duany, a young boy from southern Sudan, hosted numerous identities: A farmer of cows, a son, a brother, a child soldier, a refugee, an adolescent in an American high school, a thinker, a performer, an athlete, and a change agent. His memoir, Walk Towards the Rising Sun , represents the complexity of many young people who arrive in the United States as immigrants and refugees. In this chapter, Bryan Ripley Crandall and Ger Duany put forward critical questions for teachers and young people to ask about nation states, democracy, culture, race, individuality, and responsibility, and share ways the Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University embraces diversity and inclusivity as a civic responsibility.
