Abstract

This chapter uses Huda Fahmy’s Huda F Are You (2021) to explore how attention to language play can enhance comprehension alongside the critical exploration of identities. Using the frame of critical language lenses, the chapter discusses ways to position students positively through opportunities to explore intersections between language use and identities. Recommendations include using recently published young adult literature (YAL) graphic novels in ways that reflect the realities of linguistically diverse classrooms. The chapter provides resources for helping preservice teachers frame reading conversations related to naming and identities, consider their own language choices, and track key questions. Strategies include moving beyond deficit views through before-, during-, and after-reading activities that explore language lenses.
