Abstract

This chapter analyzes how key concepts are related to understanding the connection between contemporary extractivism and the actions of large mining companies in Latin America. The objective is to identify the violence and dispossession that these companies have exercised since the recomposition of capitalist accumulation, which has intensified in the new millennium as they integrated into the mode of financialized capitalism. These two concepts are characterized along with two additional elements: corruption and militarism, explaining how power forces—among them the State—deepen and systematize the use of violence for the dispossession of territories, the predation and contamination of nature, and the exertion of power over the bodies of women and men, while ensuring the accumulation processes of large mining companies through the use of militarism.
