The Fight for the Street
Abstract
Roads today accommodate several kinds of transportation technologies. They include, but are not limited to, cars, trucks, tractor-trailers, delivery vehicles, buses, bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and anything else on wheels that moves people through the city. Those devices also require supportive technologies such as traffic lights, crosswalks, curbs, bollards, drainage, and other items that make street travel possible and safe. However, streets are much more than a means for urban mobility, affecting numerous aspects of city living. This chapter explores these aspects in great detail, focusing on why fighting for them helps urban residents live their best lives.
