Abstract

This study employs bibliometric analysis to map micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME)-related research across Asia from 2014 to 2024, focusing on the research landscape in Sri Lanka. The findings can be used to direct actionable recommendations for optimizing MSME development strategies in Sri Lanka. OpenAlex was used as the bibliometric database, while VOSviewer was employed as the analysis software. The literature reveals that emerging economies such as India, China, Indonesia, and Malaysia have used more of their research findings for their MSME development. However, less diverse and constraint-oriented research in development has negatively impacted the development of MSMEs in Sri Lanka, where there appears to be a very limited research landscape. The results suggest that integration of research in MSME development and policy orientation toward evidence-based actions are needed in the context of Sri Lanka’s MSME development. Further, promoting digital transformation, fostering collaboration between research and industry, and establishing institutionalized monitoring should be integral components of MSME development strategies in Sri Lanka.
