Using collage as an art-based pedagogical tool to reduce inequalities in multicultural environments
Abstract
This chapter explores the application of collage as an art-based pedagogical tool to enhance multicultural knowledge, using the example of a group of international students enrolled in a Consumer Behavior course at a German university. It outlines the context in which the course took place and describes how the collage activity was developed. This activity provided students with the experience of joy in a social and friendly environment, an understanding of the differences between culture and stereotypes through sharing firsthand information among peers, an appreciation for their own culture and that of others, and, ultimately, a willingness to engage in further dialogues between cultures. Additionally, this chapter discusses how utilizing collage as an art-based pedagogical tool facilitates students&s; development of three Sustainability Mindset Principles: reflection, self-awareness, and a sense of interconnectedness. By enhancing students&s; multicultural knowledge, this activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 10: reducing inequalities within and among countries.
