The SUSTAIN concert

In November 2023, I led the Hendrix College Wind Ensemble in collaboration with our Jazz Band and Printmaking students to produce SUSTAIN: A Collaborative Concert and Sustainability Gallery . Hendrix, an undergraduate liberal arts college in central Arkansas, prioritizes a holistic education supporting engaged citizenship and the public good. We used this platform to create an interdisciplinary experience of music, the visual arts, and science to bring the ripple effects of the Sustainability Mindset Principles (SMPs) into our campus community and carry them forward. This arts-centered event allowed us to bring emotion to and increase the salience of the sustainability mindset. In the end, we created a concert experience that left audience members with the ability to describe the sustainability mindset and the SMPs; relate the SMPs to their own lives; and select an action that would develop at least one SMP in their lives.
