Abstract

Ethiquable, a worker cooperative (SCOP) involved in organic and fair trade food and founded in 2003, is a successful example of reconciling ethics, economic efficiency and social commitment. Founded by three friends with diverse professional backgrounds, the company initially focused on fair trade coffee before expanding to include chocolate, jams and other products. Ethiquable’s success is attributed to its cooperative structure, which fosters long-term strategic decision-making, prioritises social and environmental responsibility over short-term profits, and enables greater worker participation. The company emphasises transparent relationships with consumers, fair trade practices with both international and French producers, and a commitment to organic production. Currently, Ethiquable employs 165 workers, generates €75 million in sales annually and is the market leader (30%) for organic chocolate bars in France. It plans to expand its sustainable fair trade model internationally.
