Abstract

Quonex Alsatel, a 77-year-old enterprise based in Alsace, France, specialises in designing and integrating customised software, hardware and service solutions for companies and local authorities undergoing digital transformation. Initially a family business founded in 1947 as Alsatel, it went through various ownership changes, including periods under Eiffage and Quantum Capital Partners, before facing receivership in 2018. A successful employee-led cooperative takeover, supported by the regional union of worker cooperatives of Eastern France, transformed the company into a thriving worker cooperative. This involved overcoming significant obstacles, including competing bids from larger corporations and a tight deadline. The cooperative model fostered increased employee engagement, leading to improved performance, attracting new talent and achieving financial success, with sales reaching €8 million in the year following the takeover. Today, Quonex Alsatel employs nearly 70 people, operates across four French branches and is actively pursuing innovation and sustainable business practices, including a shift towards pay-as-you-go service offerings.
