Abstract

This chapter examines Creators 440Hz, a worker cooperative in Tokyo, founded in 2010 as a social enterprise and transitioned to a worker cooperative in 2023. The cooperative, comprised of young people who have experienced educational difficulties and social withdrawal, provides film-making, graphic design, website building, and event management services. The chapter explores the cooperative’s history, mission (promoting democratic education and creating a more humane society), values (respect for self and others, collaborative decision-making), and unique operational model, which centers on weekly and annual general meetings for consensus-based decision-making. The chapter further analyses the challenges Creators 440Hz faces, including the time commitment required for its democratic processes and the potential difficulties in recruiting new members who embrace this model, concluding with its potential as a social experiment in person-centred work and life.
