Abstract

The Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), founded in 1925 by 14 individuals in India, has grown into a leading global worker cooperative. Initially formed to combat exploitative labour practices, ULCCS transitioned from a labour contracting agency to a diversified infrastructure developer, employing approximately 15,000 people and impacting over 200,000 families. Its success is attributed to collective entrepreneurship, where members contribute a portion of their earnings to fund projects, ensuring autonomy and participation. ULCCS has diversified into IT, arts & crafts, education, agriculture and housing, demonstrating adaptability and a commitment to member welfare. The cooperative’s democratic governance structure, daily board meetings and focus on quality and timely project completion have contributed to its consistent growth and global recognition.
