Abstract

The Arizmendi Association of Cooperatives, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a successful model of worker cooperative development in the United States. Growing from one to eight worker-owned bakeries in 25 years, the Association prioritises high wages and worker retention through replication and clustering of small worker cooperatives. While initially thriving, the hyperinflated housing costs of the Bay Area are forcing the Association to adapt and diversify beyond its core bakery model, exploring ventures into housing and construction. Despite challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Association’s 175 worker-owners have demonstrated resilience, retaining all jobs during the shutdown. The Association’s ongoing evolution highlights the adaptability of worker cooperatives while navigating economic changes and the evolving needs of its members.
