Abstract

The At-Tawafouk cooperative in Morocco is a worker cooperative focused on waste collection and processing. Founded in 2010, it employs 156 members (27 women), previously informal waste pickers, offering them formal employment, fair wages and social security benefits. The cooperative’s success demonstrates the potential of worker cooperatives to address social and environmental challenges, providing economic empowerment, improved working conditions and contributing to sustainable waste management in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. The chapter also focuses on the wider Moroccan worker cooperative movement and on the government policies for their promotion.
