In-Situ Sketches
Abstract
Chapter 5 explores the in-situ drawing work of Phillip James Tabb, an Emeritus Professor of Architecture known for his work in sustainable urbanism, wellness, and sacred architecture. He has, since 2000, undertaken a series of in-situ drawings, primarily in Greece, Italy, and France. These drawings, often created during his travels and periods of teaching in Italy, serve as a profound exploration of architectural and urban spaces. Tabb’s work extends beyond mere representation, delving into the essence of “thin places” – locations where the boundary between the mundane and the numinous feels permeable, facilitating awe-inspiring and spiritually resonant experiences. As in-situ drawing, these quick drawings and sketches were most often created in place and while traveling. His artistic practice is deeply intertwined with his academic pursuits and publications on topics like “Thin Place Design: Architecture of the Numinous” and “Spiritual Wellness and the Built Environment,” which emphasize the importance of direct observation, immersion, and the capture of the inherent character and spirit of these historical and culturally significant environments.
