Abstract

This chapter offers a concise but wide-ranging discussion of essential terms related to anti-racist practice. Thompson presents definitions and explanations of over 40 concepts – from alienation and epistemic injustice to white fragility and xenophobia – each carefully contextualized within the manual’s broader sociological and ethical framework. The chapter aims to demystify the language of anti-racism, making key ideas accessible and usable for both students and practitioners. Thompson emphasizes the interconnectedness of the terms, noting that concepts like privilege, oppression, intersectionality and structural racism form a dynamic system rather than isolated ideas. The chapter also serves as a bridge to deeper learning, encouraging readers to explore critical race theory, decolonization and other advanced topics. By clarifying foundational vocabulary, the chapter empowers readers to engage more confidently and accurately in discussions, decision making and practice related to anti-discriminatory practice and social justice.
