Abstract
This chapter offers practical advice for sustaining anti-racist commitment over time. Thompson introduces the BREATHE model – a reflective tool that encourages practitioners to build Resilience, Empathy, Awareness, Thoughtfulness, Hope and Engagement into their personal and professional routines. The model emphasizes the importance of self-care and critical reflection in maintaining the emotional energy required for long-term anti-racist work. Thompson cautions against burnout, apathy and the tendency to move on from anti-racism when it becomes challenging. Instead, he advocates for embedding anti-racist values into everyday practices and decision-making processes. The chapter acknowledges that progress may be slow or uneven but underscores the cumulative power of consistent action. By making space for mindfulness and meaning, the BREATHE model helps practitioners stay focused and grounded. Thompson reinforces the idea that meaningful change requires both personal commitment and collective momentum.
