Abstract

Thompson explores the powerful role of language in shaping and expressing racism. He argues that language can reinforce, obscure or challenge discrimination depending on how it is used. The chapter critiques the superficial focus on ‘political correctness’, highlighting how this often misses deeper issues of linguistic exclusion, stereotype reinforcement and epistemic injustice. Thompson reflects on his Welsh heritage and early interest in minority languages to illustrate how language relates to identity and power. He discusses the importance of using terminology that respects ethnicity and challenges racial assumptions, while also warning against oversimplification. Effective anti-racist communication requires sensitivity to context, cultural nuance and the hidden meanings embedded in everyday language. The chapter also touches on how communication dynamics – verbal and nonverbal – can create inclusive or hostile environments. By promoting awareness and intentionality in language use, Thompson encourages readers to make communication a tool for equality rather than exclusion.
