Abstract

This chapter begins by noting that the phenomenon of undesirable but unremovable migrants has so far primarily been presented as an issue of the ‘Global North.’ It broadens the perspective by examining other regions of the world, such as Asia, South America, and Africa. It argues that a combination of factors - such as the absence of crimmigration policies and more limited human rights frameworks - helps explain why this issue tends to be less politically contentious in these parts of the world. That said, the chapter shows that countries in the Global South are also increasingly confronted with the question of how to formulate sound policy responses to the problem of undesirable but unremovable migrants.
