Abstract

This chapter zooms in on three groups in limbo that have been produced by large-scale conflicts, forced migration, and shifting political alliances. Deemed a threat to national security, they remain in limbo for years on end, often held in special facilities that operate outside the law, until a solution is found for how to deal with them. It consecutively discusses the situation of Sri Lankan refugees in India suspected of being members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, commonly known as the Tamil Tigers, members of the Iranian Mujahedin-e Khalq in Iraq and Albania, and suspected members of Islamic State held in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.
