Abstract

This is an original, reproduced chapter from the first edition. It covers Kohut&s;s further break from classical theory and his emphasis on a feeling and responding self, in place of an ego that organized a mechanistic psychic apparatus. Ironically here Kohut introduced his own reified model of a self with two poles and a tension arc between them. One pole represented ideals, and the other pole represented ambitions. He named this configuration the Bi-Polar Self.
