Abstract

This is an original chapter from the first edition. It offers a discussion of the posthumously published book that covered Kohut&s;s new ideas about analytic attitude and ambiance in the therapy process. He introduced his idea of a two-phase interpretative process wherein the first phase served to gather affective understandings through empathy. The second phase is an effort to explain the affects to the patient, using language in an effort to piece together a resonant story of a person&s;s life and sufferings.
