The Uninvited Guest in Your Head
Abstract
This chapter unpacks the concept of anxiety, beginning with its evolutionary role in protecting humans from danger and exploring how it can become overwhelming or unhelpful. It also distinguishes between worry, stress, and anxiety—three psychological states often used interchangeably but with important differences. Blending clear explanations with personal stories, the chapter opens with a reflection on the transition to university life, illustrating how common it is to feel anxious during major life changes. It then introduces ‘The Anxiety Squad’, a section that explores the different types of anxiety, including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias. It also highlights how anxiety can manifest differently across genders, acknowledging the diversity of experiences. Real-life anecdotes are used to deepen understanding and empathy. One story explores the author&s;s experience with social anxiety during school, while another focuses on her mother&s;s fear of flying, offering a vivid example of how phobias can shape daily life.
