The Anxiety Time Machine
Abstract
This chapter dives into the big three major psychological theories—psychodynamic, behavioural and cognitive-behavioural—with a fun and engaging twist. It begins with the psychodynamic theory, highlighting the crucial role that childhood experiences play in determining behaviour later in life. Examples are provided to demonstrate how the theory explains anxiety in different contexts. The chapter then outlines the basic principles of behavioural theory, focusing on the role played by conditioning in the development and maintenance of anxiety and phobias. Everyday examples are provided to bring the theory to life, showing how it&s;s applied in real-life situations. Finally, it introduces the core principles of cognitive-behavioural theory, demonstrating how thoughts, feelings and behaviours mix and mingle. Practical examples and real-life scenarios are interwoven throughout to make the theory more accessible for readers.
