Abstract

The introduction introduces readers to the central argument of the book, the warrant for that argument, and why this book is worth their time. As with most of the following chapters in the book, the introduction starts with a story of the author’s dad who, unbeknownst to them at the time, was their first example of what excellent teaching could look like. It then provides readers with both a 30,000-foot view of the content of the book and the central argument of the book so they have a taste of what they will read in future chapters. Most importantly, the driving purpose of the introduction is to shrink the space between the author and the readers, to let them know that as a fellow teacher the author understands their predicament and might have a way out for them if they are willing to put in the work. The introduction ends with a summary of the remaining chapters of the book.
