Abstract

In an era characterised by the growing dominance of data-driven approaches, this chapter examines the relationship between knowledge and data in digital spaces. Taking as a starting point the concept of method as a path of choices and deviations, the nature of data – understood as the outcome of cognitive processes – is explored. This is particularly important when applied to digital data, which are often perceived as providing a transparent and self-explanatory representation of social reality. The chapter then moves on to present a classification of data specific to digital contexts before concluding by introducing the active role of digital data as mediators of social experience, showing the interconnection between certain elements of platforms and social experience.
