Abstract

This chapter reminds us that the language we use matters deeply, especially when discussing topics like weight, BMI, nutrition, and movement. This chapter offers specific scripts, conversation frameworks, and responses to common scenarios that are frequently encountered in medical settings. The chapter takes into account that time with the patient is limited and valuable, and the aim here is to provide the reader with a strategy to use their time with the patient wisely and focus on the behaviors that are modifiable. The reader will learn how to respond to weight concerns, how to discuss nutrition and movement, how to redirect conversations to sustainable health behaviors, how to repair previous weight-focused conversations, and how to handle situations when patients or parents request weight-loss advice. There is even a script and guidance for how to respond when the patient or family is requesting weight-loss medications. The reader will feel better equipped to provide care that supports both the physical and emotional well-being of patients in a time-sensitive manner regardless of their body size.
