Abstract

This chapter frames Ukraine’s transition through lenses of international regime theory and historical institutionalism. It analyses the persistence of oligarchic structures, elite bargains, and path-dependent reform patterns following the Orange and Euromaidan revolutions. This chapter also introduces the concept of “revolutions without regime change”, explaining Ukraine’s cycle of high societal expectation followed by reform fatigue and rising populism. After assessing the most relevant integration-related literature, the next step is to discuss the non-economic ones. In this section, mainly relevant theories describing Ukraine and the international order will be listed.
