Abstract

Chapter Two of School Change Is a Collaborative Process: A Step-by-Step Guide to Improve K–12 Student Learning introduces the first subsystem of the Six-Point Conceptual Framework: Establish and Maintain Relational Trust and a Sense of Community . This chapter emphasizes the foundational role of relational trust and community in fostering collaborative school improvement, particularly in a post-COVID-19 landscape marked by inequities, learning loss, and social-emotional challenges. Leaders are guided to develop trust through transparency, authenticity, ethical decision-making, and consistent communication while cultivating inclusive, equitable, and participatory environments for students, teachers, families, and community members. The chapter integrates systems thinking, strategic planning, and reflective leadership practices to help leaders align values, beliefs, and vision with daily actions that strengthen relationships and collective efficacy. Practical strategies include co-creating a shared vision, promoting authentic communication, engaging parents meaningfully, and modeling vulnerability and humility. By internalizing these concepts, educational leaders, with or without formal authority, can transform school culture, build a strong sense of belonging, and foster collaboration that supports sustainable improvement, innovation, and equitable student outcomes. Trust, community, and shared purpose are presented as the essential building blocks for all subsequent change efforts.
