Abstract

Chapter Four of School Change Is a Collaborative Process: A Step-by-Step Guide to Improve K–12 Student Learning introduces the third subsystem of the Six-Point Conceptual Framework, Collaboratively Determine a Collective Focus . A collective focus is a unified commitment by faculty to pursue one or two priority areas that directly impact student learning, equity, and school improvement. Moving beyond isolated efforts, this process emphasizes systems thinking, ethical reflection, and data-informed decision-making to ensure coherence and shared responsibility. Educational leaders and teacher teams use internal and external data to identify factors and conditions influencing student achievement, such as school culture, curriculum, leadership effectiveness, equity, and instructional practices. Frameworks such as the Four Lenses of Ethics and the Four Abilities of an Equity Literacy Approach guide faculty in evaluating potential focus areas through the perspectives of care, justice, professionalism, and critique. Through structured dialogue, consensus-building, and transparent accountability systems, schools develop preliminary plans to track progress, support teacher growth, and sustain improvement efforts. The result is collective ownership of goals that are actionable, measurable, and grounded in shared values, fostering equitable, student-centered transformation.
