Abstract

Chapter 9 equips middle school students with essential skills for building healthy relationships through boundary setting, affective communication, and assertive self-expression. Grounded in developmental and prevention science, this chapter helps students explore personal values, understand emotional needs, and develop the confidence to advocate for themselves. Lesson 1 focuses on identifying and communicating boundaries to protect physical and emotional well-being. Lesson 2 introduces affective communication, based on Nonviolent Communication principles, teaching students how to express feelings and needs respectfully. Lesson 3 builds assertiveness, helping students navigate peer pressure, stand up for themselves, and maintain strong, respectful relationships. Through role-playing, real-life scenarios, journaling, and active discussions, students learn how to reduce stress, prevent misunderstandings, and make decisions that align with their values. These strategies not only strengthen social-emotional skills but also serve as protective factors against risky behaviors, including substance use. By the end of the chapter, students will be better prepared to communicate clearly, manage conflict, and set boundaries that support both their mental health and their relationships.
