Abstract

At the core of tribal distinctiveness is the role of reciprocity. This is not the simple exchange incorporated in earlier theories but an array of means by which tribesmen orient themselves in a world of shifting attachments and constant challenge. Of particular concern is how tribesmen negotiate their obligations and how these negotiations are shot through with mechanisms that simultaneously organize and enable the creative efforts of individuals and the cultural toolkit through which tribal peoples orient themselves towards one another.
