Abstract

Colonists have sought their lands, corporations their intellectual property, and armies their assistance or demise, in each case misconstruing the very nature of tribes to the detriment of both. The chapter considers the effect on tribes of settler colonialism, American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the effects of corporations on the current political and economic lives of tribes. Mistaken paradigms are also shown to be at the heart of recent wars whereas a more realistic view of tribes may help avoid such entanglements in the future.
