Abstract

This chapter explains how fathers should and should not give advice and provides specific steps for fathers and daughters to improve their communication. The author describes her four-step method for problem-solving, demonstrating each step with real-life stories and conversations between fathers and daughters. These strategies include how to seek acceptance instead of approval, offer a sincere apology, use “I” statements, use research and statistics to gain perspective, avoid blame, and free yourself from negative assumptions based on stereotypes. Using real-life stories and conversations, the chapter shows readers how to share feelings, express fears, and follow the KISS principle: Keep it simple, stupid.
