Abstract

This chapter explores the factors and situations that weaken or destroy father–daughter relationships after the parents’ divorce. It also offers specific steps fathers and daughters can take to resolve a wide array of problems related to the parents’ divorce. These stressors include: Each parent’s financial situation, child custody issues, the mother’s gatekeeping, adultery, remarriage, and stepmothers. Real-life stories and conversations illustrate how and why a divorce complicates or damages the father–daughter bond and how to protect or repair it. Using current research and statistics, the chapter also destroys several myths and stereotypes that work against father–daughter relationships: Myths about adultery, the financial impact of divorce on mothers, and each parent’s happiness after divorce.
