Kicking Away the Ladder Again? On Extractivism and Development Policies
Abstract
This chapter critically discusses the way in which the concept of extractivism has been defined, as a catch-all concept encompassing various aspects of the social, economic, and political process. This chapter discusses extractivism as such and differentiates it from the creation and distribution of different kinds of rent, unequal exchange, dependency, and labor exploitation. Different concepts are used to characterize two economies used as examples: Argentina and Venezuela. Some final reflections about policy implications of the conceptual and applied discussion are presented to conclude.
