Abstract

Teaching is a profoundly challenging and deeply rewarding profession. This book is an exploration of the mindsets and approaches utilized by happy, thriving teachers who have withstood the test of time. This introductory chapter includes the underlying beliefs and lessons learned by the author, who has twenty years of teaching experience. The chapter also introduces the ideas, themes and overarching conclusion from a study of nine educators in a high-need urban setting. These nine educators continue to find a high level of job satisfaction after years of work, and they agreed to share about their lived experiences through an appreciative inquiry study. The research resulted in the Teacher Longevity Framework, a roadmap for joyful classroom practice which is life-giving for both teachers and students. The themes of this framework include deep care and concern for student well-being; passion for content area and innovative pedagogy; dedication to a supportive learning environment; and personal qualities attuned to challenging settings. The overarching conclusion shared by all participants was: My work will make a difference. The Teacher Longevity Framework will provide the paradigm through which this book will explore sustainable and effective classroom practices for teacher resilience and longevity.
