Dedication to a Supportive Learning Environment
Abstract
Teachers who continuously commit to their work in challenging educational contexts demonstrate a commitment to creating a supportive learning environment both for their students and for themselves. This chapter outlines approaches and strategies teachers utilized to ensure a safe space for all learners in terms of physical, social and emotional considerations. Today&s;s learners depend heavily on relationships as a motivator as technology has made them more connected to others than ever before. Their relationship with their teacher and peers may shape their engagement in the learning environment more than previously understood. The Teacher Longevity Framework highlights an array of perspectives held by teachers who repeatedly create and maintain safe and supportive learning environments, year after year, in their education practice. This chapter explores the importance of hope in the classroom, and how educators can serve as purveyors of hope. The chapter also includes research related to teacher happiness beyond the classroom. This includes the creation of their own safe and supportive space within the school through the cultivation of personal identity and collegial relationships.
