Abstract

Teachers who last believe in their ability to create and maintain safe and supportive learning environments. This chapter provides tools and strategies to establish and maintain a space in which teachers can thrive and students can grow. Teachers are constantly communicating with students, with and without words. The strategies in this chapter will help ensure messages of acceptance and safety for all learners for the creation and maintenance of a productive learning environment. This chapter includes a ready-to-use procedure to build classroom agreements for expectations and boundaries in a healthy classroom community. The chapter also includes activities to support a healthy mindset in both teachers and students to result in greater confidence, increased self-efficacy and bolstered hope for a bright future. Here you will find approaches teachers can use to put the theme of a ‘safe and supportive learning environment’ into action. The activities work together to create a safe, productive space in which every learner belongs and teachers can experience a greater sense of peace and calm in their classroom orchestration.
