Abstract

Teachers who withstood the test of time shared a clear set of personal attributes that influenced their longevity in the classroom. This chapter lays out the personal characteristics most important to lasting success in challenging educational environments. As described in the Teacher Longevity Framework , teachers who withstood the test of time focus on positive outcomes and enjoy their time in the classroom. They teach in settings which align to their personal values, whether this is a dedication to empowering students in urban settings, or a commitment to some other aspect of the community. Teachers commit to continuous reflection and growth, setting aside perfectionism and selecting flexibility instead. They have the ability to self-affirm and do not rely on external encouragement or ‘kudos,’ which can be few and far between in the work of teaching. Teachers who last are more likely to ask questions than to pass judgment in challenging situations. They maintain consistent patience with the ability to set aside overwhelming challenges. They successfully separate their personal and professional lives, and they adhere to their work as teachers with a sense of calling and purpose. Numerous teachers expressed that ‘their classroom is their happy place,’ and this mindset helped them to maintain healthy, calm learning spaces even in the most difficult contexts.
