Digital Trust Equity
Abstract
As organizations increasingly rely on digital technologies, their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance is being closely examined by investors, regulators, and stakeholders. While ESG traditionally focuses on sustainability, ethical business practices, and corporate governance, the rise of cybersecurity threats and data privacy concerns has brought digital trust to the forefront of these considerations. In light of this shift, this chapter introduced “Digital Trust Equity” (DTE) – a measure of how well an organization protects data, ensures cybersecurity, and upholds ethical digital practices. The study argued that DTE represents an important yet often overlooked governance pillar of ESG, bridging the gap between traditional ESG metrics and the realities of our digital age. Building on this concept, the research adopts a systematic approach, employing a comprehensive review of ESG reports from diverse sectors, including major corporations, nonprofit organizations, industry associations, and international entities, providing a broad perspective on digital trust reporting practices. This multilayered analysis provides a deeper understanding of how digital trust is integrated into ESG frameworks and, consequently, how it impacts company performance. The findings revealed a clear “digital trust premium,” demonstrating that companies with strong DTE may not only earn greater stakeholder confidence but could also achieve higher market valuation. By incorporating digital trust into ESG theory, this study thus expands current discussions on corporate sustainability, offering a more holistic view of organizational resilience in the digital era.
