Abstract

In 1978, Tzu Chi's involvement with Lo-Sheng Sanatorium details how Master Cheng Yen and Tzu Chi volunteers provided support to the residents, individuals affected by Hansen's disease, who faced societal stigma and isolation. Through Tzu Chi's care and encouragement, the residents regained confidence and dignity, transforming their environment into a place of hope. Notably, the residents, inspired by the support they received, chose to give back by becoming donating members, marking a profound shift from being aid recipients to contributors. The chapter also covers the establishment of a ward for paralyzed residents, funded by Tzu Chi's fundraising efforts, and ongoing initiatives to improve living conditions.
