Abstract

This chapter applies the information learned from Chapters 3 to 9 to two specific camps, showing how the military expertise was “lived out” at Camp Concordia in Kansas and Camp Campbell, Kentucky, two large and well-known camps. Both administrations were built in similar geographic areas and economic regions and both struggled with segregation problems, but they dealt with the violence and deaths differently. One will find parallels in their programs and surprisingly, the camps also had a strong following of POWs post WWII who credited the camps with changing their lives. A comparison may provide insights into their successes, failures, and contradictions that might allow us to reflect on the POWs who, even today, hold fond memories of their time at these respective camps and the advantages they gained.
