Abstract

This chapter explores in depth the various elements concerned with Wayang shadow puppetry. There is an explanation of the key philosophies and methodologies behind every performance. The work of the master puppeteer ( dalang ) is identified and the equipment used is mentioned in full. The key stories are indicated, and the retelling and the performing of them in modified structures, manipulated by the art and craft of the dalang , are explained. There are detailed references to the gamelan music that accompanies every performance and the relationship between the musicians and the dalang. There are many references to the rituals that are an intrinsic part of every Wayang performance and in particular the role of the dalang as, in effect, priest for the duration of the performance and the setting up of the puppets and screen. There is a description of a case study performance that describes in detail the rituals, the environment and the performance itself, including the audience response.
