Functionalism in literary translation
Abstract
In Chapter 5 , we look at the way in which functionalism can be applied in the translation of literary texts, which is often put in doubt by its critics. In a first step, we analyze the actional aspects of intracultural literary communication, trying to identify the features that distinguish literary from non-literary communication. We then look at the Skopos of literary translation and the role of equivalence in this context. Using several examples taken from Alice in Wonderland and its translations into German, French, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Chinese, we pinpoint a few aspects of literary translation where functional perspectives may help to solve problems or to evaluate existing translations.
