Tracing theoretical footprints
Abstract
This study investigates cognitive retention of force dynamics (FD) in translation, aiming to understand how conceptual structures are preserved or transformed across languages. Employing a product-oriented framework grounded in Talmy’s cognitive semantics and the cognitive retention hypothesis, the research analyses translated texts from English into Finnish and Polish. Methodologically, it examines lexical and syntactic patterns to assess cognitive and linguistic correspondence, supported by detailed examples and comparative analysis. Key findings reveal that while translations often retain the core FD conceptualization, surface linguistic forms differ significantly, reflecting varied construal strategies. These results imply that translation involves complex cognitive and linguistic interactions, with implications for enhancing translation accuracy and developing more effective training methods. Ultimately, the research underscores the importance of integrating cognitive and linguistic perspectives to better understand meaning transfer in translation processes, contributing to more nuanced and cognitively informed translation practices.
