Background

The chapter illustrates the evolution of the context in which Italian political parties and the Italian armed forces operated from the armistice of September 8, 1943, to 1992, the starting point of the analysis carried out in this volume. To this end, the chapter traces the evolution of the threat environment, CMR, and the economic, political, and institutional context from the armistice of September 8, 1943, to 1992, highlighting how the interaction among these variables shaped the policy of employing the armed forces in military policing functions over time.
