Abstract

This introduction emphasizes the importance of self-location – acknowledging how our personal identities and experiences shape our perspectives – particularly when engaging with issues of religion and spirituality in professional practice. The authors argue that neutrality or objectivity is neither fully possible nor desirable when exploring such complex, sensitive territory. Instead, they advocate for openness, reflexivity and a commitment to anti-discriminatory practice. Acknowledging their own positionalities as white, male, cisgender and heterosexual, the authors underscore their efforts to adopt anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-heterosexist perspectives while recognizing the limitations of their standpoint. They introduce the manual’s structure which explores spirituality and religion as deeply human dimensions relevant to all people professionals, not just those with personal religious affiliations. The chapter also highlights the growing relevance of these themes in management and leadership. Ultimately, the authors call for a respectful, inclusive and reflective approach to engaging with religion and spirituality as vital aspects of holistic, ethical practice.
