Abstract

This chapter explores the concept of direction as a vital aspect of spirituality, closely linked to purpose and meaning. Direction refers to the sense of having a path or trajectory in life that aligns with one’s values and aspirations. The chapter addresses how life transitions, social adversity and existential crises can disrupt a person’s sense of direction, leading to feelings of drift or confusion. It also emphasizes the empowering potential of reclaiming or redefining life direction, whether through faith-based or secular means. For practitioners, understanding how direction functions in people’s lives can be key to supporting motivation, resilience and recovery. The text offers guidance on how to facilitate conversations about life goals, values, and aspirations in a way that is inclusive, respectful, and empowering.
