Abstract

This chapter presents openness as a spiritual quality that enables growth, insight and adaptation. It explores how a willingness to engage with new experiences, ideas and perspectives can deepen one’s understanding of self and others. The chapter draws on psychological and philosophical sources to frame openness as both a personal strength and a professional necessity – particularly in diverse, unpredictable and emotionally complex contexts. It also examines the relationship between openness and vulnerability, highlighting that genuine learning often involves risk and discomfort. Practitioners are encouraged to cultivate openness in their own lives and to model it in practice settings, creating space for reflection, dialogue and transformation. This quality is positioned as essential for inclusive, person-centred and spiritually sensitive work.
