Abstract

This chapter argues for the central role of spirituality in contemporary life and professional practice, especially within the people professions. It highlights the persistent misconception that spirituality is solely a religious concern, countering this with the view that spirituality is a universal human dimension. The authors explore how spiritual needs – such as meaning, connection and healing – transcend religious affiliation and emphasize the importance of recognizing spirituality in secular as well as faith-based contexts. With a focus on helping professionals and managers across all sectors, the chapter outlines how spiritual awareness can enrich practice and improve outcomes. The future of spirituality in practice is seen as one of integration, where attention to spiritual matters is considered not optional, but essential to ethically sound and effective professional engagement.
